A study of the media coverage of the draft laws · 2021–2026

On this page I have gathered the press articles, the official documents, the broadcasts and the video material in which the draft laws I initiated and support within the “Third Republic” project were presented, analysed or attacked: the citizens’ initiative “the Sovereignty Act”, the amendments to the Justice Laws and the draft revision of the Constitution — “the Sovereignty Constitution – The Third Republic”. The press examined them closely: some reported them fairly, others distorted or attacked them. I have hidden nothing — every item, favourable or critical, is labelled openly and carries a direct link to the source, so that the reader may check the content and the context for himself and judge for himself.

The titles of the articles are given in the Romanian original, as they appeared in the source. Links marked with * could not be verified automatically at the date of compilation; for those that have since gone dead, see web.archive.org.

General synopsis

The draft laws of the “Third Republic” project have gone through three great stages, each with its own wave of media coverage:

Analysis of the media perception

Measured against the corpus of material identified in this study, the media coverage of the projects breaks down as follows:

Type of perceptionShareProfile of the sources
Favourable / supportive~55%Sovereigntist, conservative and legal press (Luju.ro, R3media, ActiveNews, Gândește.org, OrtodoxInfo, BZI, local publications, the campaign sites). They present the projects as patriotic undertakings to protect sovereignty, resources and the rights of citizens.
Neutral / factual and official documents~30%News agencies and institutional sources (Agerpres, Rador, Jurnalul, Profit.ro, Puterea, the legal platforms Lege5, iLegis, Legal-Easy, the Legislative Portal, the Legislative Council). They report the content of the projects and their legislative passage without editorial judgement.
Critical~15%Mainstream and investigative press (G4Media, Adevărul, Radio Free Europe, Ziariștii.com, Centrul Politic). They present the projects as “controversial”, associate them with eurosceptic discourse and stress their rejection by Parliament.

Project 1 · 2021–2022“The Sovereignty Act”

The context: in January 2021 I launched the citizens’ legislative initiative “the Act for the protection of the higher and sovereign interest of the Romanian people and citizen”, written together with the citizens and completed on the basis of the suggestions received from Romanians. It obtained the favourable opinion of the Legislative Council (no. 743/15.09.2021), was published in the Official Gazette, gathered signatures throughout the country and reached Parliament — where it was rejected by the Chamber of Deputies in May 2022 (after the negative opinion of the Supreme Council of National Defence on the demilitarisation of the services) and definitively by the Senate in June 2022.

Project 2 · 2022The amendments to the Justice Laws

The context: in the autumn of 2022, through the Coalition for the Nation, I sent Parliament amendments to the new Justice Laws: the express enshrining of the supremacy of the Constitution in the oath of the magistrates and the punishment of judges and prosecutors who disregard the decisions of the Constitutional Court.

Project 3 · 2022–present“The Sovereignty Constitution – The Third Republic”

The context: thirty-three years after the Revolution, in December 2022, I publicly launched the manifesto “the last solution, a New Constitution” — the draft revision of 38 passages of the Constitution, which became “the Sovereignty Constitution – The Third Republic”: a four-year presidential term and the limitation of the President’s powers, the demilitarisation of the secret services, the stationing of foreign troops in peacetime only with the consent of Parliament, the liability of magistrates who breach the decisions of the Constitutional Court, the protection of cash, written consent for experimental medical treatment and a lowered electoral threshold. The project was adopted by the Romanian Sovereigntist Bloc at the conferences “United for the Nation — building the Third Republic” (November 2023 and January 2024) and published in Official Gazette no. 531 of 7 June 2024, opening the campaign to gather 500,000 signatures. The project’s official site: constitutiasuveranitatii.ro, with the full text of the Constitution after revision.

Video & audioVideo appearances and audio material on the projects

Methodological note. This study was carried out through systematic searches of search engines, the archives of the publications, the legal platforms and the video platforms, covering the period January 2021 – August 2026. Some 80 unique items were identified — press articles, official documents, analyses and video recordings — concerning the draft laws of the “Third Republic” project. The coverage was concentrated in four waves: the launch of “the Sovereignty Act” (January–February 2021), the opinion and the signature campaign (September–December 2021), the parliamentary passage and the rejection (March–June 2022) and the launch of “the Sovereignty Constitution – The Third Republic” (December 2022 – June 2024).
